"Love is at first not anything that means merging, giving over, and uniting with another (for what would a union be of something unclarified and unfinished still subordinate)--it is a high inducement to the individual to ripen, to become something in himself, to become world, to become world for himself, for another's sake, it is a great exacting claim upon him, something that chooses him out and calls him to vast things."
Rainer Maria Rilke via bell hooks, Wounds of Passion
Sometimes random parts of books really strike me. This is one of those parts. Bell hooks herself has lots of quotable moments--whole chapters even that leave me sitting in coffee shops making audible, affirming sounds of the wonderful words she uses and insight she has. And then she goes and throws in these other poets and authors and I just can't keep it to myself. I've read this passage out loud to a couple of people, and now I am sharing it with you. I hope you enjoy it and I hope that for everyone, love calls us to vast things.
